Answers

1. What is CCA Pressure Treated Wood?
Wood products that have been preserved from rot and insect infestation by using CCA (Chromated Copper Arsenate). The CCA preservative is a formulation of chromated copper arsenate, a formulation found to be highly effective as a wood preservative. Each of the three elements in CCA is important to its overall performance.
2.

How is Pressure Treated Wood used?
As of 1/1/2004 CCA wood products are to be used for marine, industrial, or highway applications in accordance with AWPA Standards. Most residential use of CCA has been discontinued. Please view our Helpful Guide to CCA Changes for more information. Alternative treating formulations are available for residential uses. Please call us.

3. Is CCA treated wood safe?
CCA treated wood has been in use more than 60 years. During that time we know of no serious health problem to a human or pet. CCA treated wood has been extensively reviewed by the US Environmental Protection Agency. Numerous other governmental, academic and industry sources throughout the world have performed investigations and agree with EPA that the product benefits far outweigh any minimal risks associated with its use.
4. How does CCA treated wood help preserve the environment?
Because the life of wood products is extended 10 to 20 times by the pressure treating process, it is not necessary to deplete valuable timber resources for construction purposes.
5. Is it O.K. for my children to play or run barefoot on treated playground equipment or decks?
Yes. Alternative treatments are available for applications where children will be present. If you have questions please feel free to contact us.
6. Are there any special precautions that apply to treated wood that do not apply to untreated wood?
Treated wood should not be burned. If you burn the wood, you release the preservative constituents that are locked in the wood cellulose. Burning destroys the wood cellulose and the metals end up in the wood ash. If that ash is not properly handled, it could cause health or environmental concerns. Treated wood should not be used in direct contact with human food or drinking water. Do not use pressure treated wood for cutting boards for example.
7. How can I learn more about treated wood?
Retail customers should receive a Consumer Safety Information Sheet (CSIS) from the counter person when they buy treated wood. On the CSIS the consumer will find recommendations for the handling and use of CCA-treated wood. We place the CSIS on each bundle of material. If you would like to obtain a copy from our web site, please see the MSDS/CSIS Sheets section. A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is an additional good source for learning more about treated wood.
